How to use
- Choose one JPG, PNG, or WebP photo under 10 MB.
- Select Remove background with AI. On your first use, the browser downloads the MODNet model; subsequent visits may reuse the cached copy if the browser keeps site data.
- Use Restore or Erase brush to refine the subject edge, then select transparent, solid, or gradient background.
- Preview and download the processed PNG. Transparent backgrounds need PNG export.
About this AI model
MODNet specializes in human portrait matting. Results may be weaker for animals, products, intricate hair or unusual lighting. Device processing may be slow, especially on older phones. Model license: Apache-2.0. The model can be downloaded from an external host or served as a static file from Toolsxar. In either case the model still transfers to your browser on first use, but your photo is not sent there or to Toolsxar.
Portrait photographs usually work better than products or scenery.
Frequently asked questions
Is this free?
Yes, with no paid API or account.
Will my photo be uploaded?
No. The model runs locally using WebAssembly. A model download is separate from your photo.
Does it work offline?
Provide a compatible MODNet ONNX model file to avoid downloading it. The page itself must first be loaded.
What type of images work best?
Clear photographs of people with distinct backgrounds generally work best.
Can I keep the model cached?
The browser may preserve the model in local storage. You can request persistent storage, but clearing site data can still delete it.
Can I edit the mask?
Yes. Erase and Restore brushes adjust the foreground transparency locally.
Can I export transparent PNG?
Yes. Choose Transparent as the background option.
Can I compare the original and processed image?
Yes, view them side by side or use the interactive before/after slider.
Why does my browser run out of memory?
Model inference uses significant memory; use a computer or reduce the photo dimensions if needed.
